Jim Backus, Suffolk Virginia Attorney at LawJames W. Backus has been engaged in the general practice of law in the Hampton Roads area since 1975.  He holds a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and a law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law.  He is currently a solo practitioner and was formerly a partner in the firm then known as Ferrell, Backus, Sayer, Nicolo and Mobley.

He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and member and past President of the Portsmouth Bar Association.  He was formerly a member of the Virginia State Bar Committee for the First District.  He is a member and past Commodore of the Portsmouth Boat Club and is a member of the C, E & H Ruritan Club.

He has a paralegal support staff, each of which have experience in their field for periods ranging from 12 years to 30 years in their respective fields.

He is conveniently located in Bennett’s Creek Office Park in North Suffolk on Bridge Road/Route 17, just off I-664.  In this suburban office park location, parking is ample, convenient, and free.

Real Estate

Residential and commercial real estate closings; contract negotiation and preparation; deed preparation; resolution of title issues; mechanic’s lien law; advice and representation relative to real estate issues.

Domestic Relations

Uncontested and contested divorces; negotiation and preparation of separation agreements; custody, support, and visitation issues (Circuit Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court); adoptions.

Wills and Estates

Preparation of wills; preparation of Power of Attorney; assistance in estate qualification and administration.

General Civil Practice/Personal Injury

Auto accidents and other tort claims; contract disputes; selective collection matters.

Business Entities

Formation of business entities such as corporations and limited liability companies (LLC’s); acting as Registered Agent for business entities; maintenance of business entities (minutes, resolutions, agreements, annual reports); advice to and representation of businesses.

Criminal and Traffic

Traffic matters, selective criminal matters.
